The central research clusters of the Institute for Philosophy are "Philosophy of Knowledge: The Universal, the Global and the Local" and "Normativity and its Sources: Agency, Interaction and Conflict in a Globalizing World." Philosophy of Suffering: Metaphysics, Value, and Normativity is essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, cognitive and behavioral psychology as well as those in health and medicine researching conceptual issues regarding suffering and pain. Something is said by philosophers to have ‘normativity’ when it entails that some action, attitude or mental state of some other kind is justified, an action one ought to do or a state one ought to be in. The philosophical area most distinctively concerned with normativity, almost by definition, is ethics.

Normativism in the theory of meaning and content is the view that linguistic meaning and/or intentional content essentially is normative. Wedgwood (2009, 424), for instance, argues that the claim that normativity is built into our concept of meaning/content could be true even if the corresponding metaphysical claim was false. See also Gibbard (2012) who argues that while the concept of meaning is normative, the property of meaning is not normative. Norms are concepts (sentences) of practical import, oriented to effecting an action, rather than conceptual abstractions that describe, explain, and express. Normative sentences imply "ought-to" types of statements and assertions, in distinction to sentences that provide "is" types of statements and assertions. Normativity is the phenomenon in human societies of designating some actions or outcomes as good or desirable or permissible and others as bad or undesirable or impermissible.

He does not restrict this normativity to humans a priori, but rather sees it as a contingent matter that only humans seem to possess this kind of normativity. Drawing on recent work in the philosophy of mind suggesting that the way human beings understand one other is essentially regulative and normative (Andrews Reference Andrews 2015; McGeer Reference McGeer, Hutto and Ratcliffe 2007, Reference McGeer 2015; Zawidzki Reference Zawidzki 2013), I argue that human social cognition and normative cognition are both grounded in a set of four related Book Description.

First, that something is knowable a priori might be said to have normative implications: if it is a priori that p, then one is always permitted to believe that p, come what may; if it is a priori that q follows from p, then one is always permitted to infer q from p.
