Publicity was needed to make the car a commercial success. Enter Benz's wife Bertha who made the 66-mile trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. Benz had previously built the world’s first stationary petrol engine back in 1879, but creating a car in which the chassis and engine formed a single unit was unknown territory. But, in 1885, Benz built the first automobile entirely designed as such to generate its own power. Bertha Benz’s 60-mile drive in 1888 made headlines for her husband’s fledgling auto company. German mechanical engineer Karl Friedrich Benz invented and built a three-wheel “motorwagen,” today recognized as the world’s first car. His wife helped steer the company’s first marketing campaign.
